Last week’s Tele-Talk question — “Should the town set a time limit on short-term rentals?” — received 44 responses. Some said only certain limits should be in place like fees and better enforcement while some endorsed a full ban on short-term rentals. The full selection of responses is available at conwaydailysun.com.

There are two sides to this issue, and both have valid points. Short-term rentals threaten to rip the soul from our residential community in the name of profit for those with the cash on hand to snatch up what remains of reasonably priced housing in desirable locations. On the other hand, here in Live Free or Die New Hampshire especially, we must be mindful of the rights of property owners and the economic benefit short-term renters bring. There is a happy medium somewhere between banning all short-term rentals and seeing our valley community turn into a giant sprawling motel too overpriced for local residents to actually live in. Town officials need to use the tools available through zoning ordinance to identify areas where community needs to be protected most, yet still provide sufficient area for the short-term rentals that contribute to the valley's tourism economy.
