To the editor:In regards to the recent article in The Conway Daily Sun in reference to patriotism and the Town of Chatham:I too applaud the townspeople who braved the stormy weather to show up at the town meeting to cast their vote on all the issues facing the town of Chatham. Regardless of how they voted on the issues at hand, it was great to see the turnout. It would, however, be even nicer if the individuals who were there with an axe to grind for veterans were to attend other meetings on issues (just as important) and make their voices heard, and vote. I can honestly say that I applaud those who had enough backbone to question the veteran articles and to request a re-affirmation or reversal to normal municipal tax levels. I do not believe anyone at the meeting was or is against veterans, but rather against higher taxes. Get a grip, lady.We all complain about taxes, especially when they continue to climb higher every year.In a small town like Chatham, which is again facing a 20 to 30 percent increase in tax, there is little we can do to control our taxes, since most is school expenditures for SAD 72. Possibly we should hang a sign out to potential new residents: no families with kids unless you want to pay extra. That would certainly help control growth.I do understand that this is an emotional issue for many.Ms. Logan expressed it very nicely when she suggested that maybe there should be a tax credit given for single moms, seniors or disabled persons, et cetera. I am disabled from spinal fusiondid my part in 1969 and 1970and I've got to tell you that the individual taxpayer in Chatham does not owe me a thing and should not be responsible to bear the burden of my fair share of any tax. Many fine people serve this country and this town in many ways everyday.Should we not give a tax credit to William Briggs or Wayne McAllister for their dedicated years of service, in a thankless position, that most of us would not even think about volunteering for? What about the firemen and law enforcement people who risk their lives every day to protect our property and us?Come on, people, we all need to step up to the plate and support each other, and not special interests of any kind, particularly in a small community like Chatham. The vote is over; let it rest, and be proud you are an American and can speak your piece without ridicule from other despicable people like me. I, for one, accept the vote in favor of the veterans' tax credit and will pay my taxes proudly and on time. I will also continue to fight and express myself in regards to lowering taxes whenever and wherever possible for everyone, but not at the expense of others.Thank you.
