To the editor:

On Oct. 7, Merriman House, a provider of long-term care services to the citizens of the Mount Washington Valley, closed its doors. MaineHealth Memorial Hospital made assurances that the process leading to the closure would be transparent. With closed board meetings and no public notice or opportunity for community comment, that was not the case. I personally believe that if the community — the most affected stakeholders — had the opportunity to be heard, the outcome might have been different. Perhaps that was the point of the secrecy.
