Conway selectmen and, in particular, Crow Dickinson set off a firestorm this week when they voted 4-1 not to recommend a $7,483 funding request from Starting Point, an organization that serves victims of domestic and sexual abuse. Nine non-profit agencies submitted requests for town funding this year. Only Starting Point did not win selectmen's recommendation. Voters will have the final say in April. Dickinson said Wednesday, "There are a lot of women who use (domestic violence) as a gimmick in divorce proceedings. All they have to do is call the police and get the person thrown out." The comment, and selectmen's vote, hinted of sexism to many in the community and drew a quick and harsh reaction. Dot Seybold, a Starting Point board member, said she was "shocked" and "dumbfounded" by the vote. Former selectman Theresa Kennett said Dickinson "needs to better inform himself about the facts of domestic violence."This week's Tele-Talk question is: How prevalent do you think sexism is in society today?
