The big news in the Granite State recently seems to be the bloated salaries of the state's school superintendents. The Union Leader just had a story on it, as did New Hampshire Public Radio. The NHPR reporter seemed to consider the salary of the newly hired superintendent of SAU 6, in Claremont, to be a little outrageous for a system with only 1,500 students. Timothy Broadrick, who has been superintendent of SAU 86 for about seven years, with a current salary reported at $137,800, will start at Claremont on July 1 at $182,500. That makes him one of the highest paid superintendents in the state, NHPR noted, in one of the smaller SAUs, with a salary more comparable to his counterpart in Nashua, where enrollment approaches 10,000 students.

Well, guess what. Our SAU 9 has almost exactly the same number of students as Claremont — less than one-sixth of Nashua's enrollment — and on the day Broadrick starts work in Claremont our own new superintendent will be earning more than he is.
