When your entire household income falls as far as ours does below the average salary of our “underpaid” public schoolteachers, it takes some rigorous economy to keep a homestead afloat.

Judging by the property assessments, our neighborhood is a fairly posh one, and I should feel fortunate to abide among such relative nabobs. In fact, I ought to feel pretty wealthy myself, for I’m the first member of my family to live in a three-car household. The average age of our three cars is nearly 19 years, however, and their odometers have rung up a total of 431,000 miles. The main reason we have three is to be reasonably certain that at least one of them will start on any given day.
