Every four years, it seems, we have “the most important election in history.” Exaggeration? Maybe, but I don’t think so, not this year anyway. While many Americans see Nov. 3 as Biden vs. Trump, others see it as left vs. right. I’ve voted in every presidential election since I became eligible in 1972 and, while I used to be swayed by who the person running was, that’s not very important to me anymore. It’s the platform he or she espouses that matters now.
Over that 48-year span, my political outlook has moved across the spectrum from left to right and two aphorisms sum up why. The first is attributed to Winston Churchill: “If you’re not a liberal when you’re twenty, you have no heart; if you’re still a liberal when you’re forty, you have no brain.” The second is from that other British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, who said: “The facts of life are conservative.” Democrats are so far left now they’re becoming socialist.
Nice try Tom but there is nothing truly conservative about the Trump administration. Trump has trashed norms and institutions. He exploded the national debt even before the pandemic. (Remember when debts mattered to the Republican Party?) Trump's tax cut essentially amounted to socialism for the super rich and income inequality widened as the Mar-O-Lago crowd laughed all the way to the bank. He lied to the American people about the dangers of Covid which has led to thousands of unnecessary deaths. (Over 50 people have died in the town where I grew up in New Jersey.) He has amplified racist, anti-semitic and dangerous conspiracy theories though retweets. Steve Bannon was the most recent of his close associates to be arrested for a crime adding to the growing list of grifters and felons lurking in his inner circle. Trump, himself, is an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal criminal prosecution. The Trump family continues to enrich themselves through their Hotel down the street from the White House in violation of the Emoluments Clause. The Paris Climate Accord, a painstakingly negotiated agreement and maybe the last and best measure to try to mitigate looming disaster, was ripped up by Trump. There is nothing conservative about denying the preponderance of scientific evidence. Your craven rationalizations and messy thinking don't pass any litmus test.
