What do wells and washed out roads have in common? Water, sometimes not enough and sometimes too much. Recent rains that did so much damage to the roads in and around Madison are examples of too much rain in too short a time, creating a situation that tore up many unpaved roads and driveways. But did this rain do much to replenish the wells that had gone dry last summer and fall?
I asked my friend and Madison summer resident, Dr. Bob Newton, Professor Emeritus, Department of Geosciences, Smith College, about this situation because he knows a lot about water. Bob Replied, “First off, the intense rains that did so much damage were highly localized so many areas did not get that much rain. That being said, overall there has been substantial recovery of groundwater levels during the past six months, especially March, April and May before trees leafed out, at least in some areas.
