Some hospitals in New Hampshire are barely managing to survive given that many avenues of their revenue have been shut down. Most hospitals canceled elective procedures and routine care, which represent over half of all hospital revenue, in order to ensure there are enough beds and critical-care resources for a potential surge of COVID-19 patients. How did this occur?
Hospitals geared up for the worst-case COVID scenario as advised by the World Health Organization and other agencies. They developed a “Hospital Preparedness Checklist” that included the following to plan for the projected surge: elimination of all non-essential visits and procedures (including elective surgeries) and of routine care for those with chronic and/or stable medical conditions.
