The recent closure of Province Lake and Danforth Bay to swimming due to cyanobacteria is evidence of the importance of protecting these vital shared resources.

Cyanobacteria are bacteria that photosynthesize. They occur naturally in our lakes in small quantities but increase as nutrients in the lake increase. Though “nutrients” sounds good, in this case we mean excess nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen, which lead to excessive growth of plant life and algae and death of animal life due to depleted oxygen.
