Helen Hanks recently took over as head of the New Hampshire prison system, despite my objections at her Executive Council hearing. She had many powerful supporters. I sincerely hope they were right and I was wrong.

She needs to make major changes, some of which she has already started. Hanks also brings to the job a former social worker’s deep understanding of people in crisis. I know several families of inmates who are very grateful she helped them overcome bureaucratic ineptitude.
