CONWAY — After U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen met with business leaders recently, the Sun asked about her stance on recent media reports of UFOs buzzing around the U.S.
It turns out she’s more concerned about foes on Earth than from outer space.
Shaheen was at Tech Village on March 28 to speak with business people at a roundtable event on net neutrality.
After the meeting, the Sun asked Shaheen for her thoughts on a spate of news stories about recent military and civilian encounters with unidentified flying objects that supposedly have capabilities well beyond advanced fighter planes.
“You know, we have not had anything around UFOs that I have seen in either the Armed Services Committee or any other committee that I’m on,” replied Shaheen.
In March, The Washington Post published an op-ed from Christopher Mellon called “The military keeps encountering UFOs. Why doesn’t the Pentagon care?” Mellon used to be deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence in the administrations of Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. The online version of Mellon's article has video of UFO footage that was filmed over the east coast and reportedly declassified by the Pentagon.
“Is it possible that America has been technologically leap-frogged by Russia or China? Or, as many people wondered after the videos were first published by the New York Times in December, might they be evidence of some alien civilization?” Wrote Mellon. “Unfortunately, we have no idea, because we aren’t even seeking answers.“
Just recently, USA Today and other publications ran a story about a UFO that was spotted by airline pilots over Arizona.
In December, New York Times reported that former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other then-senators obtained funding for a secret program to study UFOs from 2007-12. The Times also spoke of footage taken of a UFO flying over the Pacific Ocean in 2004. The Times interviewed a former Navy airman David Fravor of Windham who was involved in the incident.
The senator confirmed that she has seen some TV news stories about UFOs and acknowledged that New Hampshire is home to one of the most famous UFO cases of all time (The alleged Betty and Barney Hill abduction in 1961 on Route 3 near Lincoln).
The Sun asked Shaheen if she would look into UFO cases since there are implications for national security.
“I have to say, I’m a little more worried about Russia than I am UFOs these days,” she said adding China.
