CONWAY — More than 300 Kennett High students and faculty walked silently out of the front door to the school Wednesday just after 10 a.m. as part of a national school walkout.

The walkout was to commemorate the one-month anniversary of the mass shooting of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

I commend the nations students for standing together on the school safety issue. My only concern is do we really think the firearm is the deep rooted problem here? This county did not ban air buses when 3000 + died in the trade center nor did this country ban large trucks when crowds were attacked. I really feel the issue at hand is mental illness here which is being over shadowed by a politically driven anti gun movement. Society needs to be drastically overhauled to correct this violence. This country allows our citizens to blame others for there mistakes to avoid being held accountable. Our society holds every citizen citizen accountable for crimes committed by a few with new laws that only the law abiders follow. Our government needs to get your movement addressed properly so law enforcement does not overlook warning signs again and mental illness is aggressively addressed. At this point I hope our government has gotten past the "knee jerk" reaction phase and can address this issue thoroughly and properly.
