Short-term rentals - Gene Chandler

Gene Chandler, chair of the Bartlett selectmen, hopes Gov. Chris Sununu will sign an emergency order temporarily shutting down short-term rentals. (JAMIE GEMMITI PHOTO)

BARTLETT — Bartlett selectmen voted unanimously Friday to write Gov. Chris Sununu asking him to “eliminate short-term rental use for the time being and help protect the residents of this state.”

Bartlett also shared its letter with the town of Conway, and Conway Town Manager Tom Holmes confirmed it will be on selectmen’s agenda for Tuesday.

Unfortunately I don’t know this answer to this. Can someone please explain why cities/towns can’t do this own their own. Public health officials have some authority to issue temporary orders, would the authority extend to this?

I agree 100% my wife and I live in Ossipee and recently saw a short term rental from New York move in down the street. Not happy with the thought of them coming here and using our small local market. They are coming in from a closed state with a high infection rate. Not fair to those of us who live here and call NH our home. STAY HOME PLEASE!

It is interesting to me that small towns in New Hampshire want to ban short term rentals or at the very least control or limit the amount of rentals, like in Jackson. They say "we want the houses occupied full time by family's". Now we have a pandemic and they say "Gov. Sununu close all short term rentals in the state, our infrastructure can't take it" (town of Bartlett in todays Conway Sun). Well it is fine to say close all short term rentals because you can, but what if those thousands of homes were occupied full time? So before town's start banning short term rentals they had better take a look at their infrastructure. What do you think Becky MacGillivray Armstrong?
