In lieu of a more traditional obituary, the family thought it fitting to share this note John’s grandson, Peter Kilchenstein wrote last week after learning of his passing:

John G. McDonald

I was sad to hear about the passing of my grandfather this morning. On the other hand, he was well into his 90s and lived a pretty amazing life.

I'm sad to hear of John's passing. He was a wonderful man. Patient, kind, and loving.
He taught me how to ski when I was a young boy, and I still remember his gentle and encouraging words. He was a very special human being, and he will be missed by many, including me.
