MADISON — Mary Beth and Joe Dame like to say they’ve always been moving — across countries and through life, but never apart.

Married for 37 years, the Dames’ story began in Fall River, Mass., where the two college students were paying their own way through school and their paths crossed in the most ordinary of ways. Mary Beth was working as a cashier and Joe was “the counter guy” at an auto parts store. He had grown up in Avon, Mass., and was attending UMass Dartmouth majoring in engineering and physics; she was studying at Bridgewater State University and earned a degree in education.
