BROWNFIELD, Maine — With the blessing of selectmen, three volunteers sprang into action during sub-zero weather this winter to open the Rec Center so that people can stay warm overnight, charge their phones, and get some food and drink.

The Rec Center is located at 90 Main St. in Brownfield. Since the end of January, residents Jennifer Noble and Chad L. Pine have organized “emergency pop-up events" where people can get warm, get food and drink and charged their devices. Noble's son, Roland Blake, also helps with overnight shifts.
