Since the beginning of Jen's Friends Cancer Foundation in 1998, board members have worked diligently to keep administrative costs down. The foundation operates without an executive director, paid staff or an office. Monthly board meetings are held in a conference room donated by Badger Realty in North Conway.
Most expenses for its two major fundraising events — the June golf tournament and the September Climb Against Cancer — are covered by sponsorships. However, the foundation pays for administrative items, such as postage and insurance. "It's imperative that we have liability insurance for board members and events," said Kathy Sweeney, teasurer of Jen's Friends. "We also carry workers' compensation for our volunteers, in case of injury at an event."
