Calvin Winters Albee, 71, of Madison, died while surrounded by family and friends on Jan. 15, 2006, at The Memorial Hospital. He was born in Boston to Lowell and Elsie Albee on May 5, 1934, and grew up in North Quincy, Mass. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard at the age of 17 and served on Coast Guard cutters General Green and Evergreen on ice patrol in the North Atlantic from 1952 to 1956. From this ensued a life-long love of the ocean, particularly the Maine coast. In 1954 he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Louise Pettengill, and together they raised three children in Rockland, Mass. In November 2005 they celebrated 50 years of marriage, the dearest gift to him.His life revolved around family, faith and work. Throughout his life he was an active member of the Lutheran Church, at North Conway's Nativity Lutheran since moving to Madison in 1986. Most recently, he devoted himself to helping establish a cold weather refuge at the church during the winter months. For the past 18 years, he worked at Ceramco Inc. in Center Conway where his fellow workers and employer were, genuinely, a family to him.He loved people, and when he met them he worked to know them, and likely left knowing their life story. In his words and actions, he lived to convey God's grace and love.He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Albee of Madison; daughter Cheryl Alander and husband David of Bartlett; son Keith Albee and wife Natalie Conant of Beverly, Mass.; son Mark Albee and wife Ingrid of Tamworth; brother Lowell Albee and wife Inga of Princeton, Ill.; sister Karyl Brabants and husband Edmund of San Diego, Calif.; grandson Nathan Alander and wife Vanessa of Vermont; grandson Jacob Alander of Bartlett; granddaughter Lee Cappola and husband Peter of Carver, Mass.; grandson Hans Albee of Brooklin, Maine; grandson Peter Albee of Castine, Maine; granddaughter Hannah Albee of Beverly, Mass.; great granddaughter Megan Cappola of Carver, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. A worship service of celebration will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Nativity on Main Street in North Conway at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, to be followed by a gathering in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to support the outreach ministries of Nativity Lutheran, P.O. Box 1638, North Conway, N.H. 03860.
