OSSIPEE — Last week, a dedicated group of volunteers began the installation of a community garden lot at Ossipee Concerned Citizens (O.C.C.). The new garden will provide fresh produce for Senior Meals, Meals on Wheels, and Ossipee Crossings Child Care meals and snacks. The design, installation, maintenance, and educational components of the garden is a collaborative effort between Global Awareness Local Action (G.A.L.A.), Ossipee Concerned Citizens (O.C.C.), UNH Cooperative Extension, and School’s Out Program. Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation and Bald Peak Community Fund have each provided G.A.L.A. with grant funding to make this project possible. The organizations are looking for more volunteers to participate in a second garden workdayFriday, June 26thfrom2pm to 6pmfollowed by food and refreshments for participants.
This garden is one of many that G.A.L.A. has helped initiate over the last few years through their program Sustain-A-Raisers, an initiative modeled after barn-raising work parties where instead of building barns, volunteers come together to build and install gardens, compost bins, rain barrels, clotheslines, and cold frames. G.A.L.A. hosts these “Raisers” at private homes as well has community sites like schools, food pantries, public lots, and community centers like O.C.C.
