wheel

The giant steering wheel on my 1974 Mercury fascinated young car fans at a recent cruise-in. (ERIC MELTZER PHOTO)

“Look at that steering wheel!” exclaimed the young car enthusiast to his friend as he looked in the window of my ‘74 Mercury at a recent, local cruising night before taking a photo with his phone.

I was weaned on simple steering wheels, so it was nothing remarkable to me, but it was heartening to see adolescent kids take an interest in old cars. Except for his phone in place of an “Instamatic” camera, they could have been me and my buddy Dave so many years ago.
