Santa and Sleigh

The holidays are upon us, and Christmas elicits serene images of soft, snow-covered New England settings — perhaps a vintage, red automobile lightly dusted with the fine white, recently fallen powder of a chilled December evening.

Like the setting of a cheesy Hallmark Christmas movie where the faux snow is so powdery it drifts from the passing of a pedestrian as the characters try not to perspire under their sweaters and the telltale signs of frosty breath is conspicuously absent, the idyllic scene is a long way off from Christmas here in the valley, where the weather can be miserable and temperatures can get cold enough to freeze reindeer in their tracks.
