The beloved Doc Hudson “Cars” character was loosely based on a real person. (PIXAR GRAPHIC)

Anyone who has seen the Disney Pixar movie franchise, “Cars” will remember Doc Hudson but perhaps few know this adored cartoon character, voiced by the late veteran actor and genuine car guy and racer Paul Newman, was loosely based on a real person.

Back in 1950, Hudson introduced the Hornet. Their new “Step-Down” chassis gave the Hornet a low-slung stance that helped it hold the road and a big, high-compression engine provided the motivation. Marshall Teague saw the potential in the new Hudson Hornet model and convinced Hudson to provide technical racing support, the first manufacturer to do so in NASCAR competition.
