Automobile construction has evolved as advancements in design and manufacture have improved.

Early vehicles used a frame that was the foundation for the rest of the build, known as body-on-frame construction. These frames were steel and looked like a ladder with two longer side rails made of some sort of channel stock joined by cross members that were positioned at strategic locations to improve rigidity and offer support for body, suspension and drive line components.
