This year the Grand Champion was raised by Patrick Hussey, 11, Limington, Maine and purchased by North Conway Hannaford in the second round of the auction. Patrick has been involved in raising animals and lamb since he was very young. As he noted, the day starts early for him with feeding, caring for and walking his prize lamb. Patrick really enjoys being around the animals and enjoys the bonding that happens with each of them. As Patrick shared with members of the Hannaford team on the day of the auction, he may well be interested in farming as his long-term life plan.
The Highly Commended and Commended lambs were raised at Top of the Hill Farms in Wolfeboro by 18-year-old Erik Fredrickson and 16-year-old Anna Fredrickson and were bought by North Conway Hannaford. Erik (who was not available for photos on Monday) did return from Oklahoma State University, where he is majoring in agriculture, to show his Highly Commended Lamb. Anna, the younger sister not to be out done and a long-time 4-H participant herself, not only raised the Commended Lamb but also raised this years 4-H Grand Champion Beef. Anna said it is a lot of work and early mornings but she enjoys the payoff when it comes time to show her animals. Her long-term aspirations at this point are to continue her education and become an anesthesiologist.
