To The Editor:

I read Donna Joss’s letter a few weeks ago in The Bridgton News concerning the “genocide” in Gaza. The use of this word inappropriately dilutes its meaning and misinforms the public. Hitler killed eight million Jews and other “undesirables” with the intent of making them extinct. The Soviet regime purposely starved millions of Ukrainians to death to collectivize their farms. Mao Zedong killed between 30 and 45 million Chinese in his cultural revolution. Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge in Cambodia killed one third of its population to rid the land of anyone who had any education. The Hutus in Rwanda murdered an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 Tutsi’s because of tribal hatred. In all these cases, the goal was to totally eliminate a particular ethnic or other subgroup in a society.
