To the editor:
While elected officials across the country are debating how to reform the American health care system, Community Health Centers already provide an answer to many of the pressing health-care challenges we face.
Health centers are an American success story — saving lives and stimulating local economies. They are locally run, yet part of a national network that serves one in 12 Americans; more than 28 million people.
They save American taxpayers over $24 billion dollars a year in health-care costs by preventing and helping individuals manage chronic diseases. Their staffs are also problem-solvers who reach beyond the exam room to address the root causes of illness — including poverty, nutrition, transportation and other social factors that affect our health.
In our community, Coos County Family Health Services offers care and support for people of all ages including pediatrics, primary care, family planning, women’s health, behavioral health, dental and more.
We are honored to serve our community by providing health care and social services of the highest quality, and invite you to learn more about our work.
While the debate about health-care reform will continue, the value of Community Health Centers is something we can all agree upon.
H. Guy Stever, Board President
