BERLIN — The April 8 total eclipse was arguably one of the most celebrated natural events in North American history, bringing people together for a much-needed good-news event. The phenomenon also had a positive impact on travel and the economy. While it was a first for many, the 2024 eclipse, and the wave of excitement and drama it created, wasn’t a first for our country. In July 1878, another total eclipse swept through North America, sparking an international space race and is chronicled in the book “American Eclipse.”
Throughout the summer, join Great North Woods Libraries as they hold book discussions of David Baron’s book “American Eclipse: A Nation's Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World.” The highlight of the fourth annual Community Read is a virtual interview on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m., with the author, David Baron. There will be an opportunity to ask questions of this noted journalist and science writer about his writing and his global journeys chasing eclipses. Contact your local Great North Woods libraries for discussion dates and times and to borrow copies of the book.
