BERLIN — Northern Biogas made a $1 million payment last week to the Androscoggin Valley Regional Refuse Disposal District. The West Virginia company has now paid a total of $2.2 million of the $10 million contract it signed to build and operate a plant that will convert methane gas at the district’s Mt. Carberry landfill.
The district and Northern Biogas signed a 20-year contract in December 2024 that called for Northern Biogas to make an initial payment of $10 million to the district. But Northern Biogas received five extensions and had paid $1.2 million. Based on the latest agreement, Northern Biogas will have until Jan. 1, 2028, to complete the $10 million payment. . The new schedule requires the company to pay $1 million by April 15, 2026, another $3.9 million by May 31, 2026, and the final installment of $3.9 million by Jan. 1, 2028. Neither party has explained the reason for the extensions.
