Poetry and music Monday night at the library

The Conway Public Librarys monthly open mic is Monday, Feb. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Now in its third year, this venue offers a supportive atmosphere for poets, acoustic musicians and storytellers of all ages. Featured artists break the proverbial ice for the first hour. Then, after refreshments, the mic is open to all comers for five minutes each. Listeners are very welcome, too.Februarys featured artists are Lauren Tivey with original poetry and singer/songwriter/guitarist Scot Montgomery. Lauren received her undergraduate degree in Poetry and Literature from Granite State College and is currently completing a master of fine arts in poetry from Vermont College. She was recently named the recipient of the 2007 Jack Myers Award for outstanding poetry. Her work has appeared in The Sierra Nevada College Review, Red River Review, Medicinal Purposes, The Timber Creek Review, Sahara, and Red Owl, among other publications. Richard Jackson notes, "She has her own distinct voice...her poems are realistic, tough-minded, and deal with real, everyday issues...they please by their use of language and counter pointing of colloquial and traditional rhythms. Lauren is in the process of completing her manuscript of poems, as yet untitled, and recently finished her thesis on the last poems of the Hungarian-Jewish poet, Miklos Radnoti, who died during the Holocaust. Scot Montgomery is a long-time resident of Fryeburg, Maine. He grew up at a time when folk music was the voice for social change and Rock and Roll was gathering momentum. Scot has played guitar and written original songs for many years. He recently decided to share them live wherever a venue was offered. Many of his songs are topical in nature following the American tradition of speaking one's mind.Teen Advisory Board Meeting Attention local teens.
