One of the most beautiful of the woods warblers is the cerulean warbler. It gets its name from sky-blue upperparts contrasting with white below. The gloriously azure tones are said to bring birdwatchers "to their knees" at first sighting this bird.

There is a narrow blackish band across the upper breast, and blackish streaks along the sides and flanks of the male. The female bird and immatures are olive-green above with a light bluish cast. Her subtle dress is not as much of the scene-stealer as her heavenly blue male's, but is better designed for inconspicuous incubation duties.
