After intense debate last Thursday, lawmakers in the Maine House voted 76-68 to pass a bill banning the scientifically discredited practice known as conversion therapy.

Sponsored by Rep. Ryan Fecteau (D-Biddeford), L.D. 912 prohibits state-licensed therapists from engaging in efforts to “cure” LGBTQ+ minors, and/or pressure them to change their gender identity. Conversion therapy is defined in the bill as “any practice or treatment that seeks to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity, including, but not limited to, any effort to change gender expression or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same gender.”
