Notes Naturalist- Cardinal Flower.jpg

A cardinal flower, seen last August. The vivid red blossoms are only seen near lakes and in the woods near wetlands. (MATT MALONEY PHOTO)

By Matt Maloney, Special to The Conway Daily Sun

The end of July through the first two weeks of August brings forth a hidden jewel of slow moving streams and creeks, the cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis. I know of no wildflower that obtains such a brilliant shade of red. Now is the time to get out and seek the most brilliant red you’ll ever see!
