North Country Angling - Grasshopper fly patterns

The first grasshoppers were spotted in the garden this week. That sighting quickened the pulse of this trout angler. Fly fishing with a grasshopper pattern is the last chance to cast big meaty dry flies for this fishing season.

Before fly anglers developed grasshopper imitations to use as dry flies, bait fishermen would catch grasshoppers and impale the grasshopper to a hook before floating the natural down into a piece of trout-holding water. The take of the grasshopper by the fish was never subtle. The fish was not going to miss an easy way to fill its belly and return to the cool depths of the stream.
