To the editor:

I strongly object to the message the Department of Agriculture has posted on the White Mountain National Forest website, saying “The Radical Left Democrats shut down the government.”

Republicans have voted a dozen times to open the government and Dems have voted the opposite. So while both parties do need to reach the 60 vote threshold, this is clearly a Democrat shut down.

The government employee union just weighed in that it is time to pass the continuing resolution. Will Chuck Schumer listen (like he did in March when they tried this trick before)?

It is a misrepresentation to claim that the “big beaitifil bill” is taking millions off health care, unless you acknowledge that millions were put on or kept on due to Covid. Now that the pandemic is over, that needs to be terminated.

A poll last week done by KFF, a nonpartisan health research organization showed 78% of Americans support the subsidies continuing. That, unlike Trump's narrow election win, is a mandate. They know the Democrats are fighting for those people, which is why they correctly blame the Republicans for the shutdown.

Cite sources for your claims, like "millions were put on or kept on due to Covid". You habitually repeat bogus claims from fraudulent sources. I used to waste time researching your claims, but they've consistently been bogus so I'm not wasting time on them anymore. If you want to make a meaningful claim, cite your source. (No, Trump said...is not citing a source)

In 2021, Medicaid was expanded due to Covid. The expansion was sunsetted in 2025. This was done by the Democrats without Republican support when they controlled the government. Now that Covid is over, "millions" of people who were covered by the expansion will "lose" their coverage. That is true, because these are people who do not deserve it. They benefitted when coverage was expanded and now that we no longer need expanded coverage, it is going away.

This is easy to find on the Internet, a source you seem unfamiliar with or unable to research. I found a Leftist article which I'm sure you will find acceptable. This was about the claim that illegal immigrants were going to get coverage, which the parties dispute. But on the issue of disappearing Medicaid expansion, this article makes clear that my point was correct:

"Extending enhanced Marketplace premium tax credits would not benefit undocumented immigrants. Enhancements to the tax credits available to purchase Marketplace plans expires this year, unless Congress takes action, and will result in 4.2 million more uninsured people based on an estimate by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Premium tax credits have always been available only to U.S. citizens and immigrants who are lawfully present. Premium tax credits have never been available to undocumented immigrants (this is true with or without H.R. 1). Extending the enhanced premium tax credits would have no effect on undocumented immigrants. It would only help protect the coverage of 4.2 million individuals, by allowing low- and moderate-people, mostly U.S. citizens with some additional lawful immigrants, to continue to afford their Marketplace premiums."

Considering how many times I've used the Internet to point out that you're lying or wrong, that's pretty funny.

Yes, I know Medicaid was expanded during Covid, I just wanted you for once to back up just one of your claims.

Now, refer back to my previous comment about the mandate the American people are putting forth concerning their desire to see the benefits extended.

Apparently most Americans don't share your feeling that most of the people that were extended those benefits don't deserve them. I wonder why you would assume that...

G-Allen, you keep on about health care subsidies were only supposed to last during Covid. Who cares? Health insurance in the US is not affordable if you don’t have an employer who subsidizes your health care. That’s it. Every developed country in the world makes health care affordable, but not us? I’m assuming you have subsidized health care. The people who get insurance through the affordable care act are small businesses, people whose employer doesn’t give them insurance. Small businesses are great for America. Something like 90% of businesses in NH are small. But you don’t care, as long as you have yours who cares about the rest of the country. And remember this all about cutting taxes for the wealthy and large corporations. Meanwhile the admin is spending money like crazy, the deficit is rising. I assume you’re okay with $40Billion to Argentina? As long as your fellow Americans don’t get anything you’re okay with spending money.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I guess you are in favor of Socialism, where our collective society takes care of everyone from cradle to grave. Unfortunately, the track record of socialism and communism is extremely poor. It's too bad, because it's a nice fairy tale.

When government is the answer to all of one's problems, many people decide to take the easy way out and get taken care of instead of working and producing. That is just human nature. So "society" ends up being much poorer, with less innovation.

As Thatcher said, eventually you run out of other people's money.

Healthcare is not a right, neither is food, clothing, shelter, or new iphones. That our society chooses to provide many of the basics for those who are in need is called charity. I'm fine with it, but the line must be drawn somewhere, and that isn't free healthcare for all.

I do agree that our healthcare system is a mess, but the solution is not to give it for "free." Reform is needed, sure, but the bedrock principle still needs to be that able-bodied adults work in order to get paid in order to buy their necessities.

The alternative is to have a stagnant economy, one which is vulnerable to malign forces around the world. Communist dictatorships like what governs China would love America to become weak and dependent. They they won't have to fight us to take over, they just have to make all of our stuff and we will do what we are told. A weak economy eventually means a weak America.

And no, I'm not ok with huge deficits and debt. But you can't argue both sides. Your view would increase our debts, not pay them off.

G-Allen, I’m confused about your response. So, you’re worried about the debt, we agree on that. But I say again you’re okay with $40 Billion to Argentina, that’s a yes or no question? You’re okay with Trump so far spending $67 million on golfing trips, Patel using a government private jet to visit his girlfriend. How about the welfare we’re giving to soybean farmers, I’ve heard another $12 million, billion whatever is going their way. You go on and on about the country becoming a socialist country, we are a capitalist country that has a small, compared to other developed countries, social safety net, supports infrastructure. Most people that use the ACA are small businesses, are you calling them lazy? Oh, you do realize that Social Security. Medicare, and infrastructure are socialist programs? I say live by your words, reject social security, Medicare, go for it. You should read some US history, read about the gilded age, which is where you seem to want to go.

It's only a lie to the ignorant, uneducated, or brainwashed. The Republicans have continued to put up a clean Continuing Resolution for a vote, yet the Democrats keep attaching new policy changes, spending increases, or unrelated provisions. In other words, a reversal of the Big Beautiful Bill, which is now law. So, you can lay the blame for this shutdown squarely at the feet of the Democrats, who still refuse to accept the results of the last election. Rather than try to negotiate, or find compromises, or solutions in an open session, the radical Left wing has taken control of the Party. They believe holding the country hostage is a winning strategy. Once again, a small vocal radical minority is dictating terms for the majority of moderate Democrats.

G_Allen

It's not a lie at all. MA Democrat Katherine Clark recently admitted that even though people are hurting, the Democrats need to continue the shutdown because this is a point of leverage they have and they are going to use it.

It is true that both sides play the shutdown game when needed. But the difference here is that the Republicans did not put things in the continuing resolution that were objectionable to the Left. It was a clean bill. That the "big beautiful bill" passed previously and was signed into law by Trump is not relevant to the continuing resolution. That ship had already sailed. The Democrats are trying to change that decision by using one of their favorite topics (Obamacare specifically and healthcare in general) to try to win points with their base before the midterms, and to protect leaders like Schumer from their Far Left, Socialist-Communist-Marxist-Palestinian base. Doesn't Schumer realize yet that the regular Leftists are no longer in charge of his Party? He apparently doesn't yet, but he soon will.

mikerins

Are you for real? The Republicans didn't put anything in this bill that were objectionable to the Left? Maybe you've already forgotten all the things in Trump's previous bill that were beyond objectionable to the Left (and anyone with working brain cells). So now the Democrats actually have a chance to negotiate, and your advice to them is just to give up because Trump's already gotten everything he wanted in the previous harebrained bill they couldn't stop? I'm pretty sure you wouldn't advocate that course if the situation was reversed. It's sheer idiocy.

By the way, not that both parties don't engage in topics to placate their base, but at least the Democrats are fighting to keep millions of people's health care that Republicans already took away as part of the aforementioned previous bill.

It's lunacy to claim the party that controls the White House and both houses of Congress isn't the primary culprit in the shutdown, especially when it's a matter of public record Trump had his people cancel negotiation sessions and clearly already had plans to cut government employees during the shutdown and not pay the ones that are furloughed. Think for yourself, stop believing Trump's lies!

mikerins

Sadly, this is just another example of the Republican Party debasing itself for their dear leader, acting as infantile and petulant as Trump, while parroting his lies for him. There are no real Republicans left in the party, and absolutely no one with a spine or an ounce of integrity. Anyone with any integrity has been ousted by Trump supporting their opponent or has quit to avoid having to deal further with the infant king.

MEPD Ret

You constantly refer to President Trump as "dear leader". Being the POTUS does make him the leader of the Republican Party. It does beg the question: Who is the current leader of the Democrats? Because the only ones leading or speaking for the Party are a handful of radical loons. Who's calling the plays? Who's making decisions? Who's in charge?

mikerins

I refer to him as dear leader because that's what dictators are called. Once again you try the "what about" change-of-topic method to try to distract from your insane devotion to your dear leader. Nothing the Democrats do or have done changes what Trump is doing and has done. He is attacking democracy at all levels in an attempt to be a dictator or king that no one is permitted to question. Before Trump I held both parties in equal contempt, but now there is a clear choice; MAGA Republican authoritarianism or democracy. I choose democracy, you have clearly sold yourself into servitude to Trump's authoritarianism. Good luck with that.
