To the registered voters of New Hampshire: Did you know that your vote doesn’t count in a presidential election? That’s right. More than three-quarters of people in our country are politically irrelevant in a presidential election due to the electoral college system.
This is a terrible proposal and intellectually dishonest.
If you don't like the electoral college, then change the Constitution. Democrats want to destroy or "work around" our system of justice on all levels. Biden recently affirmed he would like to fundamentally change the Supreme Court. We have elected DAs who don't prosecute crimes. We have a lawless Justice Dept. which politically prosecuted the Biden administration's political adversary. And we have this movement to go around the Constitution rather than work to amend it.
Going past the mechanics of this subterfuge, it is a terrible idea.
When the Republic was created, we balanced many interests. One of those was state rights versus federalism. Many states joined the new country with the promise that their citizens would not be deprived of their vote. Allowing large states to dictate who the next President will be effectively disenfranchises small states. Their interests would no longer be protected under this scheme.
Second, having the popular vote elect the President would remove an important safety valve in our electoral system: having actual people empowered to elect someone else if something unforeseen happened, like someone died before taking office.
Third, the letter-writer's lack of awareness of current events is noteworthy. She claims that voters in New Hampshire will be disenfranchised. Doesn't she know that New Hampshire is now a "swing state" and Trump is even or maybe pulling ahead of Biden? New Hampshire voters' votes will count more this year than in most others, and the pendulum will swing back and forth across the country in the future.
Finally, New Hampshire has a unique role in our democracy as the first-in-the-nation primary. We know that candidates come here early and often to practice local politicking, meeting voters at town halls, diners, even people's homes. If this proposal were to become reality, it would end this practice because it is far more efficient to reach voters in large states than small.
But just wait until one of these "Blue" states is forced to cast their votes for a "Red" presidential candidate and you will see this plan unravel fast.
