To the editor:

To my critics: For Christ’s sake, how hard is it to reject Nazism and Confederate racism? Maybe your great-grandfather was a Grand Dragon, should we celebrate his legacy by burning crosses? If someone in your family owned slaves, should we try to bring back slavery? If one of your forefathers happened to give smallpox-laced blankets to Native Americans intentionally, should we now persecute natives languishing on a reservation? It’s quite hard to defend hate, isn’t it? It’s really difficult to come up with a palatable defense.
