Sometime in the last decade or so, Republicans have taken to declaring that America is a constitutional republic, and not a democracy. In a recent letter to the editor, Brett Williams from Wolfeboro declared that “(m)any now treat democracy as synonymous with the American system of government itself,” the clear implication being that he, at least, believes that it is not.
People really should study American history in greater depth than they do in high school.
Additionally, reducing this down to partisan political differences between Parties is just intellectually dishonest or lazy.
Even worse is to suggest that it has to do with those who support the President. That just shows a basic failure of your knowledge of civics.
The Founders were not “baffled” by distinguishing a republic from a democracy—they insisted on it. In Federalist No. 10, Madison explicitly rejected “pure democracy” as prone to faction, instability, and the tyranny of majorities. The Founders designed a constitutional republic: representative government filtered through the Electoral College, a Senate chosen by state legislatures, separation of powers, federalism, and a written Constitution that limits even the majority will to protect individual rights. They deliberately avoided pure democracy. The Constitution guarantees each state “a Republican Form of Government” (Article IV) and never uses the word “democracy.”Modern dictionary definitions blur the terms because of popular usage, but that doesn’t erase the distinction the Founders drew. America is democratic in the sense that we elect our leaders. It is a constitutional republic because supreme power is constrained by law rather than raw majority sentiment. Removing “constitutional republic” in favor of simple “democracy” rhetoric invites the very majoritarian excesses the Founders feared—court-packing, abolishing the Electoral College, or rule by executive fiat and administrative decree.
This is not semantics or recent “talking points.” It is a defense of the actual system the Founders built. Pretending the distinction doesn’t matter does not make it disappear; it simply weakens the constitutional guardrails that protect liberty.
Unless you declare yourself to be a Socialist, Communist, or Anarchist. But nobody is doing that now, are they?

The core issue is not semantics and minutiae, it's the fact that Trump and his minions are attacking our form of government, the Constitution, and the rule of law on a daily basis. Stop trying to distract from that, it just makes you look desperate. Of course, you are desperate to try to distract from what your dear leader's doing, that's understandable given his disastrous performance and matching poll numbers. Trying to distract from those things isn't going to work though. Maybe you should try writing to your dear leader with some advice about how NOT to try to tear down our country and its institutions. That, though obviously a long shot given Trump's proclivity for ignoring advice, expert or otherwise, would at least be a noble effort, unlike your current one.
Oh, bless your heart. The pearl-clutching is truly Olympic-level today. "Trump and his minions are attacking our form of government," said unironically by someone whose side spent years lawfare-ing political opponents, cheerleading censorship, redefining words like "woman" and "recession," and treating the Constitution like a suggestion box whenever it gets inconvenient. Spare me the sacred institutions sermon while the actual guardians of those institutions leak like sieves, and the rule of law somehow always points in one direction.
The "disastrous performance and matching poll numbers" bit is especially rich. The same script every cycle: sky-is-falling hysteria, selective polling that somehow always flatters the blue team until reality shows up, then stunned confusion. If your argument rests on "everyone knows Trump is destroying everything," maybe consider that the people "distracting" are the ones still pretending 2021-2024 was peak governance instead of a greatest hits album of inflation, border chaos, and institutional rot. But sure, keep lecturing about "noble efforts" while writing fanfic about Dear Leader's daily crimes against democracy.
The desperation isn't on the side pointing out the emperor has no clothes—it's on the side that keeps screaming the emperor is literally Hitler every single day, then acts shocked when fewer people keep buying the melodrama.
Maybe try touching grass instead of writing concerned letters to the ether. Just a thought.
