To the editor:

The detailed Article on Memorial Day by Tom Eastman reminded me of my experience on May 8, 1945, the day Germany surrendered unconditionally at the end of World War II. Since my family lived in the most eastern province of Germany in Silesia, the Red Army was on its way to Berlin, which surrendered on May 2, while my home town, Breslau, had been under siege for three months, and was the last city to surrender on May 6.
