To the editor:In last Fridays article about Jackson businesses being blazing mad over fire code enforcement, Mr. Funicella drew a direct association between my personal objection to elements of the U.S. Forest Services THAN timber project and complaints related to the enforcement of fire safety codes. The lumber harvesting and fire safety issues are not related. It is even more regrettable Mr. Funicella failed to reassure the public the Eagle Mountain House complied with all inspections, consistently tested and monitored its fire safety equipment, as well as maintained and modernized its life safety systems as dictated by the Town of Jackson.Additionally, this selectman conveniently failed to mention was I have supported, and even complimented, the U.S. Forest Service and its maintenance of this countrys forest lands. This is all a matter of public record.Mr. Funicella elected not to disclose to the reporter what my objections to the THAN Project were, among these were: significantly increased volume of heavy logging trucks using Carter Notch Road and the potential dangers this would create for pedestrians at the Eagle Mountain House and Golf Club; wear and tear damage to Carter Notch Road with no mechanism to fund road repairs having been established; as well as additional noise and possible negative seismic effects that could occur to this and other historic buildings along Carter Notch Road.My position was, and still is, the U.S. Forest Service could have constructed a connecting service road from Route 16 into the THAN Project area rather than send millions of pounds of timber rumbling through the Town of Jackson. A service road would have enabled timber removal to continue for decades without ever having to come in contact or potentially doing harm to the Jackson community. This service road would have been a long-term win-win for the U.S. Forest service, loggers, forest fire fighters and the people of Jackson from a safety point of view and earning more logging revenue.Clearly, Selectman Funicella has much more political experience than I on how to effectively use sound bites to further his agendas. I wish to convey to The Conway Daily Sun readers that I found Mr. Funicella remark that I do not want anything to be untruthful and offensive. What I want is understanding, cooperation, fairness, equality and what is best for the Eagle Mountain House, its guests, staff members, owners and the majority of our Jackson community. I am certain other Jackson businesses are looking for much the same.Responsibility in not giving blame, it is accepting accountability for ones own actions. I just happen to be very passionate about my responsibilities and working towards keeping my business viable in these extremely difficult and financially-uncertain times. If Selectman Funicella believes my not agreeing with him makes me a complainerthen I plead guilty as charged. What remains to be seen is how long a grudge might be held or what retributions could be in store, even after sharing facts and legal expertise on these matters in an effort to help guide our Jackson selectman with their difficult decisions.
