In 2016, during the first and most competitive of Gov. Chris Sununu's four races, he and his Democratic opponent, former Executive Councilor Colin Van Ostern, spent a total of approximately $2.5 million.

This year's gubernatorial candidates, Republican Kelly Ayotte and Democrat Joyce Craig, are on track to spend nearly $23 million. Ayotte, primarily funded by out-of-state contributions, has raised nearly $18 million, while Craig has raised about $6 million.
