CONWAY — Concerned that voters would not be willing to support a $460,000 warrant article on top of a budget that could be $1.7 million more than last year, Conway School Board members decided Monday this is not the time to try to bring early childhood education to the school district. Members also raised concerns over the proposed funding of the program, stating that a portion would be subsidized by the taxpayers, a burden they didn’t feel was fair.

“What I think would be unfortunate would be if we put a warrant article on this year and lose it forever,” said board member Mark Hounsell. “We recognize even ourselves that we need to put a sunset clause in this. I would propose that the wisest way to go is to continue the conversation for another year, fine tune this and see what we can do. If you put this warrant out to the voters, you will have a devastating loss and that will set any idea of a preschool back many years. If you wait another year you have a better chance of success.”
