CONWAY — Gene Chandler (R-Bartlett) returned to a familiar office Thursday afternoon after being elected House speaker during a special election. His opponent was Democratic Leader Steve Shurtleff of Penacook.

Chandler, who previously served as speaker from 2000-04, has served as deputy speaker for the past three years under Speaker Shawn Jasper, who stepped down last week to be appointed state Commissioner of Agriculture.
