The date set for federal elections (first Tuesday following the first Monday in November) was implemented by the 1845 Presidential Election Act. The date was chosen because American society was still quite rural in the mid-19th century, and many voters travelled several hours to reach the polls.

Church obligations made weekends impractical, and Wednesday was market day, so Tuesday was the best day. Other factors included relatively fair weather, and the completion of the harvest. The mid term election will be held at KA Brett School in Tamworth from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday Nov. 8.
