Longtime readers might know I’m a Scout guy. The original International Harvester Scout was a pioneering SUV, first released in 1961 as the Scout 80. IH was known to change model numbers and add letter designations as improvements were made, rather than waiting for the industry standard of four years between new model rollouts.
The Scout 800 was introduced around the same time I was introduced to the world, 1966. The 800 designation reflected the payload of the little SUV with interchangeable tops. In 1969, International offered the Scout 800A with an optional 304 V8 and in 1971, the 800B model was marketed for half a year before the Scout II came on the scene. The new Scout had a slightly bigger, more comfortable design and the original “Scout” script was changed to block letters.
