Joan Marie (McCarthy) Newton, 92, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, just one month shy of her 93rd birthday. Joan Marie was born an identical twin with her sister Jean Mary on April 2, 1933, in Little Falls, N.Y., to her parents Robert and Elizabeth (Costello) McCarthy. She joined her older brothers Richard and Robert.
Joan spent her early years in Little Falls until she attended Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I., where she graduated with a degree in Business. Soon thereafter, she met Robert Newton at The Ritchie Organization where they both worked. They married on October 16, 1954. The newlyweds settled in Squantum (Quincy), Mass. where they raised their four children Cyndi, Rob, Melissa and Davey. Joan and Bob were members of the Squantum Yacht Club. A yearly tradition was competing in the sailing races during Quincy Bay Race Week. Squantum had a spirited parade every year on the Fourth of July and backyard cookouts. Joan’s was extra special and if you were there early enough, you could be assured to eat one of her delicious deviled eggs with an American flag toothpick. During the years in Squantum, Joan worked for Winchester Industries. She loved her job and her coworkers, spending nearly 30 years there before retiring as an executive assistant.
