It all started with Doris Day when she founded The Doris Day Animal League in 1978 and Spay Day USA in 1995 to help end the problem of homeless pets. Many other countries recognized that they could also help reduce cat and dog homelessness and followed this effort. The Humane Society of the United States merged with the Doris Day Animal League and this program became ‘World Spay Day.’ It is observed on the last Tuesday in February each year all over the World and the motto is ‘Beat the Heat.’

In honor of ‘Beat the Heat’ month, any owned cat or dog that is registered for spay/neuter at Rozzie May Animal Alliance during February 2026 will receive a free microchip. Gracie May (cat) and Debbie Miller, founder and President of Paws Four The Claws are generously donating the microchips. They will be inserted and registered by Rozzie May Animal Alliance staff.
