Like Bilbo Baggins, I love maps. A big part of my managing to write a hiking column for so many years has been the habit of poring over maps to get an idea of what to hike next. Most often, I peruse the maps in the AMC guidebooks, whether the White Mountain, Maine Mountain or Southern New Hampshire guides. Another favorite is the Wonalancet Outdoor Club map of the Sandwich Range.

Yet, for some odd reason, I have never written a column about a map. It’s time for that.
