To the editor:

Many thanks to Paul Grenier for his years of public service. It is telling that he was motivated to run for city council because of school budget cuts, and now, 32 years later Berlin has cut its school budget by $600,000, and several years ago closed Brown Elementary to save money. Yet this year it was still necessary to raise the property tax rate. For over 30 years the state legislature has violated the state constitution and the rulings of the state supreme court in defiance of Part II, Article 83 of the constitution mandating the state’s duty to provide an adequate education for all children. The result — underfunded schools and high property taxes which hit especially hard in economically poorer counties and cities.
