1979 VII

Hello fellow Berlinites. It was opened in 1916 and replaced the old Sam Paine covered bridge that was just north of it, where the Berlin Veteran’s Memorial Bridge is today. This structure, which was called the Bridge Street Bridge, the Eighth Street Bridge, the Berlin Mills Bridge and even the Morris Company Bridge, handled motorized and pedestrian traffic across the Androscoggin River on Upper Main Street for 63 years. Shortly after sunrise on Oct. 31, 1979, it was barricaded, posted and closed. This meant that it was unsafe for both pedestrians and vehicles.
